ABOUT OUR FOUNDER
Abijah Bertrand (1980-2019)
Abijah Bertrand was a man who was filled with a tenacious heart, passion and spirit for serving individuals with disabilities within the Gainesville, FL community. He strived to help others reach their full potential, and he did so with a compassionate heart.
With over 40 years of combined experience and service with the disabled community, Abijah and Percyette Hoskins founded Life Transition Skills, Inc. Their mission was to help develop and empower adults with intellectual disabilities achieve their full physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual potential. They sought to provide programs that provide meaningful and purposeful services and activities for young adults with disabilities.
As Life Transition Skills, Inc. continues to grow, we will honor Abijah Bertrand’s legacy by fulfilling his mission and vision of serving and helping persons with disabilities with his same passion.
Life Transition Skills, Inc. has the aim of developing and empowering youth & adults with intellectual differences in achieving their full physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual potential, as individuals, and as independent, responsible citizens and members of their local communities.
Birthed from over a combined 40 years of work with students with disabilities and experience in the school system the Life Transition Skills, Inc. team saw a real need throughout the Greater Gainesville region for quality programs to assist young adults with disabilities. The first issue that was tackled was the need for education focused programming during the summer when school was not in session. In addition, there was a need for a program to address the friendship/social aspect of these individuals. Thus was birthed the highly successful summer camp and Gainesville Buddies programs.
Gainesville Special Education Guru, Abijah Bertrand who passed away on Dec. 11, 2019, organized a talented team of individuals to create programs that provide meaningful and purposeful services/activities for semi-independent adults with disabilities. The team includes Percyette Hoskins, former teaching aid and current specialist for adults with disabilities and Jamea George, registrar at a local high school. Together they have created customized programs for young adults with disabilities including the very popular summer camp and Gainesville Buddies, a social club that meets bi-weekly. The Life Academy is a new 10-month, 2-semester day program started in the Fall, 2017 and has open enrollment. In the future, other services will be made available such as job skills trainings and assistance in finding jobs that match each adult's interests and skill level. Note: All staff on the LTS team have received a background screening.
